Play the Game You Love Safely

Playing golf is everything to some of us. It’s a game of skill and patience, but the one game you don’t want to play is one with the sun. Now that spring is here and summer is around the corner golfers have to take extra precautions.

Golfers can be at an extra risk from the sun’s harmful rays. The problem most golfers have in protecting themselves is with sunscreen and the slippery residue left on their hands after applying. If the residue gets on your grips they can be harder to hold. With this in mind, there are many golfers who would rather not apply it or only before they begin their rounds, but with some lasting four to five hours sunscreen just doesn’t protect that long. This can be a tough spot for golfers when the advice is stay out of the sun during peak hours which is usually between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those hours work out OK for most during the week, but during the weekend only so many people can fit into the morning tee times.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, (SCF) golfers can receive up to five times the amount of ultraviolet radiation in an hour needed to cause sunburn, increasing the chance of skin cancer. Another tidbit, is that sand and water can reflect more than 80% of the sun’s rays and the likelihood of melanoma doubles after five or more sunburns. Wycliffe strongly recommends you follow these tips to remain safe while playing in the sun:

  • Wear lightweight moisture-wicking, sun-protective clothing
  • Wear a wide-brim hat to help protect neck and shoulders
  • Play early in the morning and late in the day when the radiation is less intense
  • Use sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher), reapplying every two hours or every nine holes. Keep it in your golf bag or if have a caddy, let them hold it
  • Use a golf umbrella for shade while walking or waiting
  • Wear UV protected sunglasses (polarized if possible and make sure they cover your entire eye)

It’s Spring Cleaning Time with Wycliffe Charities Foundation

Wycliffe Charities Logo v1r1 copy

Spring has sprung, flowers are blooming people picnic-ing outside and of course shredding your old papers! On Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 12noon, Wycliffe Charities Foundation is holding it’s “Shredding Event” out in the Clubhouse West Parking Lot. Sounds exciting we know, but we’re not only shredding your papers for a minimum donation we’re recycling all our materials as well so Mother Earth will say thank you.

We wanted to hold an event much different than ones we’ve had before. Our purpose since 1995 has always been to give back to the people and organizations in Palm Beach County that mean so much to us and who have helped so many others in the process. We’ve personally distributed over 1.4 million dollars to numerous organizations through events such as this. They have included: Children’s Home Society of PBC, Families First, Horses Healing Hearts, Kids Cancer Foundation and many more. Other fundraising events, such as our golf tournaments and our Bike/Walkathon, also raise funds that go right back into Wycliffe Charities Foundation so we can continue to grow and help more noble organizations along the way.

Our Spring Cleaning Shredding is just another one of our fabulous events where we can have some fun, enjoy great company and give back to our community. Let’s all make a difference together!

We’ll see you then.

Earth Day. Everyday at Wycliffe

Every year on April 22 millions of people try to save Mother Earth in their own way. We recycle more, save water and energy! Originally proposed by Peach Activist, Mr. John McConnell to honor the Earth, the first official Earth Day Celebration was created on March 21, 1970. Today, more than 200 million people in over 192 countries, each coordinate their efforts in helping us reach our goal of living in complete environmental protection.

This day is also a very important one for Wycliffe Golf & Country Club. One thing we love to do is help the environment in any way we can. Not only do we recycle paper good, but Wycliffe holds special events such as our “Shredding Event” on May 2 hosted by our Wycliffe Charities Foundation. We gather paper that companies and outsiders want to shred and recycle. It’s a very important event as we know the benefits and the importance of recycling this material. The Wellington Garden Club also works with us on various initiatives for Earth Day, such as planting trees, various landscaping projects as well as working directly with Habitat for Humanity.

We are also very proud of our very own Wycliffe Green Thumb Society presently led by Mrs. Sonni Roth. Their efforts have increased awareness tremendously. They not only plant trees, but they also educate others on the importance of Earth Day and why each person can make a difference. Each department is also doing their part by recycling plastic bottles, paper and other goods that can be turned into sustainable materials that we can re-use from day-to-day. What we also love to hear,is when Wycliffe Member’s decide to recycle on their own. We constantly encourage them to recycle from their home. The result is outstanding with a majority of us doing our part to save Planet Earth!

This April 22 is more than just simply recycling, it’s about giving back and keeping our planet healthy and raising awareness for our future generations to come.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Restore. Replenish. Let’s all work together and do our part! Connect with Wycliffe Golf & Country Club on social media! Facebook Twitter Pinterest YouTube Blog

Wycliffe Spa Helps Keep Member’s Healthy

Massage therapy is more than relaxing “me-time.” Studies continue to prove the physical and emotional benefits of even a single massage therapy session. As the number of proven health benefits grows, so do the number of Americans who turn to massage therapy for a more balanced and active lifestyle. Massage has been shown to decrease cortisol (stress hormone) in the body. This allows the body to enter a relaxing rest-and-recovery mode; an effect that will linger long after the massage is over.

Pilates and Golf: A Perfect Match

“Contrology develops the body uniformly , corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit. It is known today as Pilates.” – Joseph Pilates

Were you aware that nearly 60 percent of both recreational and pro golfers suffer from golf-related injuries at some point in their lives? It’s true! These injuries often relate to lack of conditioning, improper stroke techniques and lack of flexibility. Incorporating a Pilates routine dramatically improves your fitness level and your golf game; but most importantly, it decreases golf-related injuries. Pilates golf exercises increase range of motion, balance and stability, posture and body alignment. It also strengthens core muscles, too, which can be crucial to a player. It’s been proven that when golfers are physically fit, they improve their golf swings without the worries of back and shoulder injuries.

Golfers of all levels are finding that consistent Pilates practice improves their games while minimizing pain and injuries. The golf swing is a highly complex full body movement. For the right handed (left side dominant) swing, the left or leading side of the body is more commonly injured than the right or trailing side, and vice versa. Golf stresses the body in unique ways that can lead to acute and chronic injuries over time. Luckily, preventive measures such as Pilates can minimize golf-related injuries of the back, shoulders, elbows, hands, and wrists. Here’s a good example: maintaining optimum dynamic posture and spine angle can reduce lower back strain and improved shoulder stability, which in turn can relieve shoulder, wrist and elbow pain. Proper mechanics and swing plane require a great deal of strength, flexibility, and a strong core. By practicing golf specific Pilates exercises on a daily or weekly basis, gives golfers the edge they have been looking for. While classical Pilates is great for all around conditioning and will certainly help you perform better in all aspects of your life. Golf specific Pilates is functional because you are mirroring golf positions relating to various swing phases.

Pilates is whole body exercise just as the golf swing is. It works all of your physical performance factors and demands integration of breath, control, flexibility, strength, precision, and body awareness. What golfers have to realize is that when you develop awareness of moving from your core first you will initiate every shot or putt from the same place, leading to increased repeatable and consistent shots and putts. That can make all the difference!

Here’s a look at how Pilates can help develop good posture as well as develop your core muscles and stability/flexibility.

Wycliffe Spa Offers Members a Chance To Feel Reinvigorated

European philosophy first originated for spa treatments with the idea of preserving health and instilling a sense of well-being in a person. Over the last number of years Spa has evolved to include the indulgence of pampering the body and delighting the senses. The result? A synergy among health, pleasure and complete relaxation. For the rest of the month of April we want to do just that. Wycliffe Golf & Country Club Spa is offering its members a “Sanctuary Warm Springs Massage,” which is an incredibly soothing massage that helps to balance your mind, body and soul, while utilizing traditional techniques of a Swedish Massage paired with heated lava shells.

Another regimen is the Skin Anti-Aging Facial which we’ve specifically designed to renew, restore and even tone your skin tissues for a more youthful appearance along with a healthy glow. Wycliffe Spa always makes its members feel relaxed with our team of highly trained, experienced and certified staff. Junior Golf Champion Takes On Wycliffe Pros in Exhibition

When you think of a Golf Champion what names come to mind? Maybe Bubba Watson or Tiger Woods? Introducing Nicklas Staub, an 11-year old sweeping the golf course with his tremendous skill, talent and natural ability to play the game. The first time Nicklas picked up a pair of golf clubs was between the ages of 1-2. Although they were toys, his parents knew that was only the beginning. His father,  a competitive athlete himself, taught Nicklas the meaning of of team work and what sportsmanship was all about. Almost a teenager now, Nicklas has won multiple competitions, including the 2011 US Kids Golf World Championship.

On Saturday, April 11, 2015, Nicklas will partner up with Wycliffe’s Director of Golf and play against some of our Assistant Golf Professionals as part of our Pro Exhibition. The game will be played on the back 9 of the East Course. The format of the exhibition is Better Ball of Partners – Match Play. The teams will be comprised of two players rather than three or four. The two players on the team each play their own golf ball throughout the round. On each hole, the two team members compare scores, and the lower of their two scores (the better ball, in other words) counts as the team’s score. A quick example would be on the first hole, Player A scores 5 and Player B scores 4; “4” is the team score for Hole 1.

Both Wycliffe Staff and Members are very excited and honored to have Nicklas playing at Wycliffe Golf & Country Club. It’s going to be a great day for golf! Connect with us on social media! Who’s Taking Home The Green Jacket This Year?

masters images

The Masters Tournament is back starting on April 9-12 at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA. So who will get to wear the ultimate symbol in golf greatness? Tell us your predictions!

1) Bubba Watson – The defending champion is in a great place mentally and continues to hit his driver far and accurately in a way no one else can.

2) Jimmy Walker – Having a total of five wins in 18 months, a top 10 in his first Masters, 18th in driving distance and ninth in total putting. Not many can say they’ve done this!

3) Jordan Spieth – The putting that carried him through several early season weeks continues to be brilliant and he has set up his schedule for at three-week run, his favorite way to peak. He’s certainly a top contender in this match!

jordan speith

4) Dustin Johnson – Dustin is not just longer than ever (first on the PGA Tour in driving distance), he’s averaging an impressive eight yards more than second place; very impressive.

5) Jason Day – He’s eighth in driving distance at 305.1, second in putting average and finished off a strong. Don’t forget, Jason just missed this title back in 2011 and 2013.

6) Adam Scott – Adam normally comes right under everyone else, but then in the end, makes his big comeback. That’s how he likes it! I wonder which putter and driver he’s thinking of using?

adam scott

7) Rory Mcllroy – He certainly seems to have the control and touch needed to contend! Audiences are very optimistic about Rory and think his powerful swing and putting stance is all he needs to make the Masters his.

8) Louis Oosthuizen – Already having two top 10’s to start his 2015 PGA Tour season, and should glide into Augusta just nicely to make a big finish.

9) Patrick Reed – Patrick has been supported by a strong Ryder Cup performance and another solid early season start that saw him win the Tournament of Champions. Do you think this Augusta State standout has enough power to handle the course? Only time will tell, but we wish him the absolute best!

10) Matt Kuchar – Kuchar makes up for his average length off the tee, plus has a very strong track record at Augusta National. Can Kuchar pull it off and become a strong contender?

11) Hideki Matsuyama – This self-taught defending Memorial Champion has proven he can handle fast greens!

12) Henrik Stenson – Nearly winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational, he has a very strong competitive streak and the desire to win this. His only tendency is to three-putt even though he’s one of the world’s best with the flat stick. Let’s see what he does this time around.
